Introductory Ultrasound for Sports Medicine (IUSM) courses are delivered in 1/3 theory and 2/3 practical sessions.

IUSM courses are designed as an introduction to sonographic anatomy and needle guidance techniques in musculoskeletal applications. This course is particularly suitable for sports medicine and other physicians with an interest in musculoskeletal ultrasound.

The two day IUSM course is overseen by Dr. George Koulouris, consultant radiologist.

Course objectives

At the completion of this course you will have:

  • Received a brief introduction of the basic principles of ultrasound, knobology, artifacts and image optimisation
  • Gained experience in navigating the ultrasound system and its features
  • Received an introduction to musculoskeletal sonographic anatomy and basic image interpretation
  • The ability to demonstrate basic practical proficiency in needle guidance techniques
  • Received an introduction to musculoskeletal procedural applications
Introductory Ultrasound for Sports Medicine Program
Day one Basic physics, instrumentation, knobology, artifacts and image optimisation
Normal and abnormal musculoskeletal sonographic anatomy
Practical sessions - Achilles and patella tendons, planta fascia and common extensor tendon on real patient models
Day two Ultrasound guided injections, technique and clinical applications
Practical session - needle guidance on ultrasound phantoms
Practical session - joints
Case studies
