Why ultrasound matters Ultrasound plays a critical role in the third trimester for midwives, providing essential information that supports safe and informed clinical decision-making. A third trimester ultrasound can assist in evaluating amniotic fluid volume and providing crucial insights into fetal well-being. It can help to identify complications such as oligohydramnios, polyhydramnios, and abnormal placental positioning. Additionally, real-time imaging enhances midwives’ ability to confirm fetal position before delivery, reducing the risk of unexpected complications during labor. By integrating ultrasound into third-trimester care, midwives can provide more comprehensive, evidence-based care, improving mother and baby outcomes while enhancing their confidence in managing complex cases. Developing ultrasound skills is valuable for midwives as it enhances their clinical practice and allows for timely assessments at the point of care. While certain advanced assessments, such as middle cerebral artery Doppler, require specialist training, midwives can still benefit from foundational ultrasound skills to support their decision-making. Attending a point-of-care ultrasound course equips midwives with the practical expertise to interpret ultrasound results confidently. Additionally, integrating ultrasound into care pathways—alongside skills gained in early pregnancy assessment—enables midwives to deliver holistic maternity care, ensuring the best possible outcomes for both mother and baby.
