Most ultrasound physics courses teach equations.
This one teaches you what those equations do – to your image, your probe, and your clinical decisions.
If you’ve already studied ultrasound physics but still don’t feel confident adjusting your image or explaining why something is happening, you’re not alone. This course is designed to change that.

Why is learning ultrasound so important for obstetricians and gynaecologists?
In the modern OB-GYN practice, the ultrasound probe is your most powerful diagnostic ally. Mastering this skill isn’t just about obtaining an image; it’s about the real-time clinical correlation that transforms patient outcomes.
1. Beyond the “First Look”: Confirming Viability
Early pregnancy assessment requires more than just finding a gestational sac. Our training focuses on high-resolution techniques to:
- Establish Viability: Confirm intrauterine pregnancy and confidently identify normal cardiac activity and early embryonic structures.
- Rule out Ectopic Pregnancy: Gain the scanning proficiency to identify adnexal masses and pregnancy of unknown location (PUL) with speed and accuracy.
- Establish chorionicity and amnionicity: Use a systematic approach to assess for multiple pregnancy
2. The Foundation of Obstetric Care: Precision Dating
Timing is everything. ZEDU’s curriculum emphasises the technical nuances of first-trimester biometry.
- Crown-Rump Length (CRL): Master the callipers to establish a definitive EDD, the cornerstone for managing late-term inductions and spontaneous labour.
- Clinical Impact: Minimise unnecessary interventions by ensuring your dating is beyond reproach.
3. Advanced Surveillance: Fetal Wellbeing & Growth
Move from basic measurements to comprehensive fetal surveillance. We provide hands-on training for:
- Placental Mapping: Accurate localization to identify previa or low-lying placentas before they become delivery-room emergencies.
- Fetal presentation: Get definitive diagnostic clarity needed to identify malpresentations like breech or transverse lie and proactively transition from a routine labor plan to a safe, evidence-based delivery strategy.
- Serial Biometry: Expertly tracking growth trajectories to differentiate between a “small for gestational age” fetus and true Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR).
- Fluid Dynamics: Mastering the Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI) and Deepest Vertical Pocket (DVP) to assess placental sufficiency.
4. Hemodynamic Insights: Doppler Proficiency
ZEDU takes you beyond static 2D biometry by providing the expertise to utilise the Umbilical Artery Doppler and middle cerebral artery Doppler for advanced hemodynamic surveillance. This shift to physiological assessment allows you to distinguish the constitutionally small fetus from one experiencing placental failure, providing the definitive data needed to monitor the at-risk fetus and precisely time life-saving interventions.
5. Transabdominal and Transvaginal Scanning & Gynae Clinical Applications
A core pillar of the ZEDU training program is the transition from theoretical imaging to clinical proficiency through supervised practice on real patient models in all trimesters of pregnancy. This hands-on approach is essential for mastering the tactile nuances of the transvaginal probe, ensuring you can navigate the female pelvis with both diagnostic accuracy and patient comfort
- Adnexal pathology: In the presence of pelvic pain or a PUL, can I clearly visualise the ovaries and identify any extra-uterine masses or free fluid in the Pouch of Douglas?
- Endometrial and myometrial integrity: Does the endometrial morphology correlate with the patient’s menstrual cycle, and are there focal lesions like fibroids explaining abnormal bleeding?

Skills development
Every ultrasound user must establish the ultrasound skills fundamental to acquiring an image – from turning a system on and optimising the system setup, to patient positioning and ergonomics. We’ll give you the foundations for independent practice.

Scanning Skills
To get the most out of your efforts and before picking up a probe it’s important to identify your objective – do you have a purpose for scanning? Scanning for scanning’s sake isn’t optimal. When learning you need to engage in deliberate practice to develop your ultrasound skills. When applied clinically, you need to have the ability to define your needs, identify limitations and make decisions. We’ll help you focus on where you’re going and what you want to achieve.

Learning Pathway
Attending a course is one thing – making the time to develop your ultrasound skills and abilities is another. Learning ultrasound is a lifelong commitment – trust us, we know. Commit to invest your time before you start. Take time to remove practice barriers. Focus your time. Track your progress. Spend time developing skills out of the clinic. We’ll work with you to identify a pathway for skills development in your context.

Support
When you get back to the workplace, what’s next? Early enthusiasm to use ultrasound can soon fade to frustration when you return to the workplace, where the reality of clinical demands and often lack of ultrasound users can undermine your confidence. We can help by providing ongoing support, training and credentialing – as well as ongoing information through our free coaching corner and social media posts. We’re there for you.
