Objectives
On completion of this one day clinically focused ultrasound course, participants will be able to:- Use ultrasound system controls to optimize imaging for accurate diagnosis in clinical practice
- Develop proficiency in probe manipulation to efficiently acquire diagnostic images for point of care gastric ultrasound
- Accurately identify key anatomical landmarks (aorta, sma, IVC, gastric antrum, body, and fundus)
- Distinguish between an empty and full stomach using ultrasound
- Describe the imaging findings associated with an empty stomach, liquid in the stomach, and solid food in the stomach.
- Quantify gastric volume using the Perlas method
- Explain how different patient positions (supine, semi-recumbent, right lateral decubitus) affect gastric ultrasound imaging
- Assess and interpret gastric ultrasound findings in high-risk patients (e.g. those with delayed gastric emptying) to evaluate the risk of pulmonary aspiration of gastric contents
