Zedu Weekly Wrap – 6 October 2023
Hi Crew…
daylight savings hit this week with a bang – I’m thinking that a one hour shift is harder than dealing with the lag from an international trip! Or is it easier when you travel because you have the upside of being somewhere new and exotic to counteract the effects? Anyway – it was a long weekend so can’t complain!
This week’s news and views to check out include:
- Blocktober 23 is here – take a look at the daily posts from Jeff Gadsden (@jeffgadsden) at DukeU and friends covering all things regional anaesthesia – there’s something for everyone
- A research piece on our favourite topic – the IVC – titled “SHoC-IVC: Does assessment of the inferior vena cava by point-of-care ultrasound independently predict fluid status in spontaneously breathing patients with undifferentiated hypotension?” (29 September).
And Suean had a great turnout for the Coaching Corner on Thursday October 5 – although it seems a few got confused about the timeshift. Not to fear though – the recording will be up in the next week or so. In the meantime have a look at the back catalogue here…
See you next week.
Mike and Suean

Get the most out of your teaching moments – join our TRain the UltraSound Trainer (TRUST) course This isn’t a course on how to perform an ultrasound examination or use the technology – it’s designed to give you the teaching tools you’ll need to teach ultrasound on the run. In the words of a previous participant – it’s meta!

Morning! It’s the 5th day of #Blocktober23 and I wanna touch on a subject that bugs me (pun intended): infection control. There’s a range of practices out there when it comes to how to prevent infection with US-guided procedures, but what’s best practice? @amit_pawa @GongGasGirl pic.twitter.com/6i59sjMlWr

Happy 4th day of #Blocktober23 ! Let’s talk knees: We love our adductor/ipack/genics combo for TKA, but what about the cutaneous nerves? Are they important? I mean, it’s just skin, right? @ASRA_Society @amit_pawa @EMARIANOMD @Steve_Coppens @drrobbieerskine @bobfunn @VeenaGraffMD pic.twitter.com/3uxLvqmsNp

Yo, it’s the 3rd day of #Blocktober23 and I wanna talk about fat. Specifically the kind that saves lives during LAST. In my view, lipid emulsion is one of the most significant advances in acute care medicine in the last 20 years. (Yes, that’s lipid latte art…delicious & safe) pic.twitter.com/eRQx0LLO7I

Hey hey it’s the 2nd day of #Blocktober23 and we’re talking suprascapular nerve block. We do this when we’re concerned about phrenic nerve block in at-risk patients, and will combine it with an axillary nerve block or an infraclavicular BPB. Surprisingly effective? Yup. pic.twitter.com/6A2BMpEzz2
