Core Scanning Skills

• Move the probe intentionally to get the image you want and adjust imaging controls to produce clear, diagnostically useful images.
• Structure the examination to ensure all relevant anatomical structures and measurements are systematically assessed, reducing the risk of missing important findings.
• Use sonographic terminology to accurately communicate ultrasound findings and complete worksheets for various imaging scenarios.
• Communicate effectively in the exam room to obtain relevant clinical histories, address patient concerns, and enhance patient satisfaction.
• Gain informed consent for transvaginal ultrasound (TVUS) by clearly explaining procedure details, risks, benefits, and alternatives to support patient understanding and voluntary decision-making.

Gynaecological Ultrasound

• Master transvaginal scanning – perform examinations on real patient models using purposeful probe movements and optimised imaging to produce clear, diagnostically accurate images
• Apply a systematic approach and structured protocol to assess the cervix, myometrium, endometrium, ovaries, adnexa, and pouch of Douglas.
• Identify normal pelvic sonoanatomy and recognise the sonographic appearances of common gynaecological pathologies.

Early Pregnancy Assessment

• Apply a structured protocol to evaluate the uterus, adnexa, placenta, and embryonic anatomy.
• Perform accurate biometric measurements, including crown–rump length (CRL), mean sac diameter (MSD), yolk sac (YS), and heart rate (HR).
• Evaluate presentations of pain and bleeding in early pregnancy.
• Use diagnostic criteria to identify pregnancy failure, pregnancies of unknown location, and indeterminate pregnancies.
• Confidently assess for intrauterine pregnancy and recognise ectopic pregnancies
• Assess for multiple pregnancy and establish chorionicity and amnionicity in multiple gestations.
• Communicate unexpected or sensitive findings appropriately and compassionately to the patient.

Second Trimester Anatomy Scan

• Apply a systematic approach and structured protocol to assess the cervix, placenta, maternal structures, and detailed fetal anatomy including brain, face, heart, thorax, abdomen, limbs, and digits.
• Perform accurate biometric measurements: biparietal diameter (BPD), head circumference (HC), abdominal circumference (AC), and femur length (FL).
• Identify normal fetal anatomy and recognise abnormal findings requiring further assessment or referral.

Third Trimester Fetal Wellbeing Assessment

• Accurately determine fetal presentation
• Apply a structured approach to assess fetal wellbeing and fetal growth, amniotic fluid volume (AFI), and Doppler ultrasound parameters of the umbilical artery (US) and the middle cerebral artery (MCA)
• Conduct a biophysical profile (BPP) to assess overall fetal wellbeing.
• Identify signs of fetal compromise and growth restriction, and communicate findings clearly to support clinical management.

Prerequisites

This ultrasound course is designed for students who meet the following criteria:

1. Currently enrolled in a Graduate Diploma of Medical Ultrasound and
2. Registered as a student sonographer with the Australian Sonographer Accreditation Registry.

Course Cancellation by Zedu On rare occasions, we may need to cancel a course due to insufficient numbers. In this case, you’ll receive a full refund of registration fees, but Zedu will not reimburse travel or accommodation costs.

1. Do I need previous ultrasound experience to join? Most Zedu courses are designed for students currently enrolled in a Graduate Diploma of Medical Ultrasound or equivalent. Ideally, you should have access to a clinical placement to apply your skills immediately. If you don’t yet have placement, the course will still accelerate your skill development—but ongoing practice is essential to retain new skills.

2.Do I need prior training? No. This course is designed for complete ultrasound novices who want to build essential skills before—or during—their trainee placement.

3. How will I practice during the course? Our courses focus on hands-on learning with live patient models of different ages, body shapes, and simple pathologies. Short, focused practice sessions allow you to explore probe handling until it becomes second nature, building muscle memory that you can take straight into clinical practice.

4.Will this course help me get a job or clinical placement? We can’t guarantee employment, and Zedu cannot guarantee clinical placements. What we can guarantee is that you’ll leave with real-world scanning skills, personalised feedback reports, and a certificate that employers and placement providers value. While some students have secured placements through connections made during the course, the true benefit is the skills, confidence, and credibility you gain to excel once an opportunity is secured.

5. What if I can’t attend the course I registered for? You can nominate a substitute, transfer your registration to the same course within 12 months (subject to availability), or request a partial refund depending on notice periods. Full details are in our Cancellation & Transfer Policy.

6. How much theory vs practical is included? We combine short, focused lectures with immediate practical sessions, so you put theory into practice on the same day. At least 75% of your time with us is hands-on, active learning, ensuring you build real scanning skills rather than just hearing about them. Pre-course materials give you a head start, and lifetime access ensures you can revisit the content at any time.

7. Do I need to bring anything? Everything you need is provided: course notes, scan worksheets, journals, and access to online pre-reading. We recommend comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes suitable for scanning.

8. Will I get support after the course? Yes! All participants receive mentorship support and lifetime access to pre-course materials. You’ll also have structured journals to track your progress and consolidate learning in your workplace.

9. How long until I can confidently scan independently? Skill acquisition depends on practice and repetition, both during the course and in a clinical environment. Our intensive, hands-on courses fast-track competence, but ongoing application in a real-world setting is essential for mastery.

10. What if I have dietary requirements or need accommodation? We provide lunch, snacks, and bottomless tea & coffee. Accommodation suggestions are included in pre-course emails. Let us know your requirements when registering so we can ensure your needs are met.
